For admins
How to grade a quiz or assignment
The three tabs of the grading panel, points, comments, returning work for revision and what the learner sees.
What the system marks itself and what you have to mark
Closed questions (single choice, multiple choice, true/false) are marked automatically, immediately. You don't need to touch them.
Two things come to you for manual grading:
- text answers from quizzes, meaning short and long answer questions,
- assignments, meaning work a learner has submitted as a file or text.
Until you grade them, the learner's quiz score is waiting for you and the lesson doesn't count towards their progress.
Where it is
Sidebar, Administration section → Grading. The address is
/app/your-academy/admin/grading.
Trainers, managers, admins and the owner can see it. Members and moderators don't have it in their menu and can't get in via the address.
The three tabs and what's in them
- Text answers (n): quiz questions waiting for points.
- Assignments (n): work submitted by learners and not yet graded.
- Graded (n): assignments already graded, read-only, no editing.
The number in brackets is the number of items. Zero in the first two tabs means you have nothing outstanding. Graded quiz text answers leave the list and don't go to the Graded tab.
Grading a text answer from a quiz
- Go to the Text answers tab.
- Each item is one card: the question type, who answered, which lesson it's from, the maximum points, the question and the learner's answer.
- In the Points field, enter how many you are awarding. The field starts empty, and the "Grade" button only works once you enter a number.
- In the Comment field you can explain your decision. This field is optional.
- Click Grade.
You can't enter more than the maximum or less than zero. The field trims the value itself.
Grading an assignment
- Go to the Assignments tab.
- If the learner submitted a file, its name is a button. Clicking it opens the file in a new tab. The link is valid for 10 minutes; after that, click the file name again.
- If the learner submitted text, it is shown on the card.
- In the Grade field, enter the points. By default 60 percent of the maximum is filled in, which is a suggestion, not a grade. Change it.
- Write a Comment.
- Click one of the two buttons:
- Approve: the grade is final and the work moves to the Graded tab.
- Return for revision: the work goes back to the learner, who can correct it and submit again.
How you know it worked
The item disappears from the pending list and the counter in the tab name drops by one. Approved assignments appear on the Graded tab.
If nothing changed, look for a red message giving the reason: for assignments it appears below the buttons, for text answers at the top of the list.
What the learner gets
A notification in the app, under the bell. It says what it's about: that a quiz was graded and with what score, that an assignment was graded and how many points it got, or that an assignment was returned for revision and they should read the comment.
The system doesn't send an email for this, and it can't be turned on at the moment.
For a quiz with several open questions, the notification only goes out after you grade the last of them, so the learner doesn't get five notifications in a row.
When the lesson counts for the learner
Quiz: when, after your grading, the score reaches the passing score set in the quiz. The lesson is then ticked off automatically and progress goes up.
Assignment: when you click Approve. "Return for revision" doesn't complete the lesson, and that's the point.
Common stumbling blocks
"I don't have Grading in my menu." You have the member or moderator role. Grading starts at the trainer role.
"The learner says they submitted it, but I can't see anything." Check you are on the right tab: quiz text answers and assignments are two different lists.
"I graded it, but the learner's progress hasn't moved." The score didn't reach the quiz's passing score, or "Return for revision" was clicked instead of "Approve".
"I want to change a grade I've already given." The Graded tab is read-only. Changing a grade that has been given isn't possible from the panel at the moment.
When to write to us
- A learner's work is on the list, but the file won't open after several attempts.
- After approval the learner's progress doesn't go up, even though the passing score was reached.
- You need to change a grade that has already been given.
Write to support@cohorta.pl with the academy address, the learner's name, the lesson title and roughly when you graded it.
